The Rose Window rises above the communion table. The center symbol of the chalice represents the cup Jesus blessed and gave to his disciples at the last supper. Since Jesus's death which followed cannot be separated from the cross, the cross appropriately is the background of the chalice. Jesus' words at the last supper, "'This is my body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me'." (I Cor.11:24,25) This emphasis on "remembering" meant that the petals of the rose should contain symbols referring to Christ.
The sheaf of grain is a reminder of the words of Jesus "I am the bread of life; he who comes to me shall not hunger." (John 6:35)
The torch reminds us of the words of Jesus, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (John 8:12)
The lamb as a symbol of Jesus Christ comes from John the Baptist's statement, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29) The lamb carries the Banner of Victory symbolizing our Saviour and the victory he makes possible over sin and death.
The Alpha and Omega remind Christians of the statement recorded in Rev. 22:13, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."
The next petal is a path symbolizing Jesus as the way of life.
The crown is used to depict the kingly office of Christ. "He is Lord of lords and King of kings." (Rev. 17:14).
The door symbolizes Jesus' statement in John 10:9, "I am the door; if anyone enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture."
The cluster of grapes remind us of Jesus' words, "I am the vine, you are branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5).
