Dave Kauffman

Dave Kauffman

1932 - 1998

Dave's Place was named for Dave Kauffman who was a member of Central Christian Church. Dave began a ministry of providing financial assistance to those in need of help with rent, utilities, food, transportation, etc.  He solicited funds from the various helping agencies and churches.  He received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award in June 1998 for his efforts on the behalf of those less fortunate.  After Dave's death, Central Christian Church wanted to see this ministry housed in our building as it had been from its inception.

Dave's Place was then staffed by volunteers from several churches and continued to be funded by contributions from churches and individuals.  All monies contributed were used to help needy persons; nothing was spent on administration.

On September 1, 2004, the services that had been provided by Dave's Place were moved to Church Community Services.  A commemorative service was held at Central Christian Church on August 29, 2004 to honor Dave Kauffman and to express appreciation for the volunteers who ministered to "the least of these" through Dave's Place for five years.  A plaque displayed in the church reads as follows:

"In grateful memory of David R. Kauffman, lifelong member of Central Christian Church.  Pioneer in ecumenical ministry through the Downtown Churches Coalition and tireless advocate for those in need.

Dave's Place - 1999-2004.  In appreciation for all the volunteers who faithfully ministered to "the least of these" through Dave's Place."
